How we calculate this

Volume

Area × depth gives the volume of gravel.

Weight

We use 1,600 kg/m³, typical for 10–20mm gravel. One bulk bag of about 850 kg covers roughly 10 m² at 50mm.

Ordering

We add your waste allowance and round up to whole bulk bags. For small jobs we also show 20 kg bags.

These are estimates for ordering materials, not a structural design. Check site conditions, and anything unusual, with a qualified builder or engineer.

Common questions

How deep should gravel be?

40mm for borders and around plants, 50mm for paths and driveways. Deeper than that and it becomes hard to walk or drive on.

What gravel is best for a driveway?

Angular 14–20mm gravel locks together and stays put. Rounded pea gravel rolls about under tyres. Lay it over a compacted Type 1 sub-base.

Do I need a membrane under gravel?

Yes, a weed membrane stops weeds coming through and stops the gravel sinking into the soil. It's cheap and well worth it.

How much does a bulk bag of gravel cover?

About 10 m² at 50mm deep, or 13 m² at 40mm.
